Plot Introduction:

The story is set during the Anti-Japanese War in the Baiyangdian area of Hebei Province. It tells the tale of a young hero named Yulai who uses his familiarity with the local watery environment to outwit and ultimately defeat the Japanese invaders.

Yulai is a mischievous child but also a "respected" child leader; whenever he goes out to play, almost all the children follow him. Consequently, to skip school, Yulai engages in a "tug-of-war" with his teacher.

In the process of "competing for the children's attention," the teacher suffers from many pranks played by Yulai. However, the teacher quickly overcomes Yulai, and all the children return to the classroom with the teacher, leaving Yulai quite frustrated.
