◎Introduction:
Phoebe (played by Elle Fanning) is a little girl who is only around ten years old but often daydreams about things that exist only in fairy tales and could never happen in reality. The school Phoebe attends has decided to rehearse a classic stage play, "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." For Phoebe, who loves fairy tales and enjoys imagining things, this is naturally an opportunity to showcase her imagination and acting desire. So Phoebe enthusiastically signs up for the actor selection process and is eventually chosen by the director of the play, Miss Dodger (played by Patricia Clarkson), allowing her to fulfill her wish of joining the cast.
However, Phoebe’s life within the production crew is not all smooth sailing. Harsh reprimands from the principal, conflicts with other children in the cast, and Phoebe’s own self-expectations lead to increasing pressure during rehearsals. Her performance level gradually worsens, becoming worse and worse. Phoebe’s father Pete (played by Bill Pullman) and mother Hillary (played by Felicity Huffman) are both very worried about Phoebe’s poor performance state, especially Hillary. She is writing a doctoral dissertation on the human longing for Wonderland as its central theme. Therefore, these parents know how much their daughter values this opportunity for the performance. If it ends in failure, it will be a significant blow to Phoebe, possibly even affecting her entire life.
Phoebe’s parents try to understand and help their daughter, but without much success. Phoebe feels that all of this stems from her being out of place in this real world. As a result, Phoebe imagines herself into a fantastical world akin to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." In this world, everything resembles the story, with flowers and birds, but also filled with unsettling events and conspiracies. All of Phoebe’s friends and family in real life take on another identity in this fantasy world. Within this unfamiliar environment, Phoebe re-examines the strangeness and pain in her life, and through this process, Phoebe gradually undergoes some changes—transforming like a beautiful butterfly emerging from its cocoon...
