◎Introduction

Larry Daley's private life is a complete mess. Ever since some magical events occurred in his job as a museum night guard not long ago, Larry's entire life has changed. However, this secret he has always intended to keep hidden from everyone, because he is afraid of being locked up as a lunatic; secondly, he believes that his adventure is unique and there is no need to share it with others. With the help of a group of prehistoric monsters and historical figures, Larry's work is carried out with great enthusiasm and has received much praise from the museum leadership. But he will have to say goodbye temporarily to the American Museum of Natural History in New York, because Larry has already prepared to focus on his invention company and bid farewell to the position of curator!

At the same time, the American Museum of Natural History in New York plans to expand its scale. During the renovation period, some precious historical artifacts must be transported to other museums for safekeeping, and most of the artifacts are sent to the Smithsonian Institution. It should be noted that this museum is the largest natural history museum in the world, with more than hundreds of millions of art collections and valuable specimens. Larry learns about this news and knows that those restless exhibits will definitely make a fuss in their new home. Therefore, he tries to stop the museum from taking this action, but under the insistence of the curator, the exhibits to be moved still set off in a grand manner. In the process, the monkey Dexter secretly takes a plaque describing the ancient Greek hero Agamemnon onto the vehicle...

What happens in the Smithsonian Institution turns out exactly as Larry expected. All the historical figures without exception cannot sit still, and they all start fighting for the plaque of Agamemnon, because they firmly believe that this plaque can give them infinite power. Larry has no choice but to rush to the Smithsonian Institution to calm these exhibits down again... In the Smithsonian Institution, Larry continues to deal with various exhibits, such as Napoleon ordering Larry to lead his army to attack Europe, while General George Armstrong Custer seems to want to continue the Civil War... Faced with these historical figures who don't know what era they are in, Larry is greatly troubled. Helplessly, he seeks help from President Lincoln in the museum, and this respected President of the United States also seems to have his own little quirks... Faced with such a chaotic situation, Larry can only use the large number of historical items stored in the museum to turn the tables and let these historical figures find their respective destinations. Helping him is the first female pilot to cross the Pacific Ocean, Amelia Earhart, and together they once again make the museum go crazy...

Behind the Scenes Production

Again, the Noisy Museum

No one would have thought that a raucous comedy made carelessly during the spring season could achieve a box office success of $250 million, and the creator of this miracle is "Night at the Museum." The market returns far exceeded expectations, so making a sequel seemed reasonable, and the leading actor Ben Stiller naturally became Fox's cash cow. Regarding the sequel to his highest-grossing film in his acting career, he said: "Filming 'Night at the Museum' was an unforgettable experience. I worked with a dynamic production team for several months, and the final result of the movie was very good, which satisfied me greatly. I really like the theme of 'Night at the Museum,' seeing many rulers from different histories appear in a small space of the world and then have a lot of stories unfold. This is actually a story that can create a lot of topics. I think viewers should be able to see some comments on reality in this story. When those historical figures from the past walk through our society according to their ways of doing things, besides laughing uncontrollably due to absurdity, you should leave with more thoughts."

Compared to the first installment, the story of "Night at the Museum 2" moves to the Smithsonian Institution, this globally renowned natural history museum, but the protagonist's identity remains unchanged, still that somewhat dim-witted museum guard. Ben Stiller, who consistently plays this role, says: "In the first movie, there were many regrets left. We wanted to incorporate too many things into the story, but the movie only had two hours, and it couldn't narrate so many interesting things. So when the first movie was finished, I was already discussing with director Shawn Levy whether there was a possibility of shooting a sequel. Fortunately, the first movie was very popular, and the movie company also believed that a sequel could be continued. However, at that time, both the director and I already had other commitments, so it took over a year to start shooting. But this period was not wasted. We recognized the shortcomings of the first movie, such as appearing too loose and lacking sufficient persuasiveness. These flaws have been discussed by me, the director, and the screenwriter for over a year, on how to handle them better, so that the sequel looks more like a complete movie. Finally, we chose the Smithsonian Institution, and the director, screenwriter, and I conducted many on-site inspections. Then we gradually formed a rough shooting plan for the second movie, and now, it's the version everyone sees."

Even funnier and crazier

Since the huge hit of "Night at the Museum" in 2006, director Shawn Levy put down his directing baton, producing quite a few comedies in the following years, with varying box office results. However, he has nurtured many comedic talents, resembling a new Judd Apatow. Three years later, Shawn Levy returned to direct "Night at the Museum 2." Regarding this sequel, Shawn Levy said: "After finishing the first movie, I felt that more diverse types of comedies should be created, so I didn't quickly shoot the sequel. However, the decision to make a sequel was determined long before. Now, it's just turning the plan into reality. I hope the entire team maintains the same form as the previous one. Collaborating with everyone again makes me feel very happy, especially with Ben Stiller, who is undoubtedly a big comedy star. In the first "Night at the Museum," his slightly neurotic and awkward performance style was an indispensable factor in the movie's success. Therefore, in this installment, we decided to maintain Ben Stiller's performance style, not making any significant changes, so as not to require the audience to rebuild their impression of his character in the movie. But Ben Stiller doesn't seem to like the foundation we set for him; he hopes to change his style of portrayal, but we rejected him (laughs). So this "Night at the Museum 2" is truly a movie work that fully inherits the previous one."

Many people are curious about what kind of jokes Larry will cause in this episode and which celebrities he will mingle with. What kind of surprises will the second episode bring to the audience? Regarding this point, Shawn Levy said: "Our goal is to be even crazier and funnier, letting the audience completely unexpected. In this episode, we will fabricate many scenes where historical figures interact with Larry in absurd ways. If the audience is familiar with natural history, they will surely laugh non-stop. One thing worth noting is that this episode is still very healthy. We aim to create a comedy suitable for all ages, hoping that the whole family can go to the cinema. So in 'Night at the Museum 2,' the new jokes are still clean, but this will not affect the overall comedic effect of the movie. In short, after watching it in the cinema, everyone will understand our original intention."

The Smithsonian Institution, Inspiring Infinite Imagination

The main scene of the film is set in the Smithsonian Institution, chosen for its sheer size and complexity, which instantly elevates the scale of the movie. Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian Institution focuses on culture, education, and in-depth exploration of the world, funded by a donation of half a million dollars from British scientist James Smithson, who never stepped foot in America but hoped to provide a special place here to promote "the increase and diffusion of knowledge." 150 years later, the Smithsonian Research Center has become a core attraction in the U.S. capital and the largest museum complex in the world, collecting everything from ancient stone tools to important American historical documents to culturally significant artifacts like Archie Bunker's recliner. Approximately 25 million tourists visit each year, inspired by paintings in the National Gallery or antique aircrafts in the National Space Museum, leaving people awestruck and exhilarated.

For the director and crew, the Smithsonian Institution isn't just a backdrop for the story, but the core of this grand comic adventure, akin to kids running into a candy store. This idea reignited the passion of the team behind the previous film, including screenwriters Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon who adapted Milan Trenc's children's book into the movie script; they infused more humor into the story, creating "Night at the Museum" in such a context.

Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon were concerned that the larger the museum, the greater the chances for magical events, surprising battles, and irresistible funny stories. "Unlike the natural history museum which consists of only one building, the Smithsonian Research Center spans the entire National Mall area," laughed Karan. "We faced an extraordinary challenge, designing a story across the museum complex with an endless chase." After much discussion, the duo of screenwriters decided to concentrate the main action scenes in a few places within the Smithsonian complex: the Space Museum (the museum with the highest visitor numbers worldwide), the Smithsonian headquarters castle, and the Lincoln Memorial Hall. Thomas Lennon pointed out, "When we wrote 'Night at the Museum,' we aimed to write a fun, action-packed movie that everyone would enjoy. We also started from this perspective to consider how to use the Smithsonian as the setting for this movie."
