This film, based on a great deal of detailed and meticulous historical research, uses high-quality production techniques to recreate the city of Nanjing as a dead city in the gloomy and cold winter of 70 years ago. With a weightier texture than an ordinary epic blockbuster, it portrays the resistance spirit of Chinese civilians and the spiritual struggle of an ordinary Japanese soldier as its main storyline, presenting a Nanjing completely different from previous historical narratives. This is even a Nanjing with sparks of hope. Because in this city, in this place of life and death, even when facing desperate situations, even under the ruthless crushing of the war machine, there is still a fire within the humanity of the Chinese people that burns secretly. There are still people who use their lives, blood, and willpower as fuel to keep this fire burning, never letting it extinguish.

The film begins in December 1937, when the city of Nanjing fell. Although a large number of Nationalist soldiers fled the city, many soldiers who refused to surrender stayed behind and carried out hopeless yet fierce resistance in the streets and alleys of the city. Among them was Lu Jianxiong (Liu Ye), a member of the elite Nationalist forces.

After the final failure of the resistance, after the blood of hundreds of thousands of Chinese finally dyed the Yangtze River red, the entire city of Nanjing became a land of death. The only place with any remaining vitality was the "Safety Zone" at Jinling Women's College. Here, a large number of refugees temporarily found respite due to John Rabe's Nazi identity. Those actually in charge of refugee work in the safety zone were Rabe's secretary Mr. Tang (Fan Wei) and the returned female teacher Jiang Shuyun (Gao Yuanyuan).

However, in the eyes of the Japanese army, so-called "Safety Zones" were merely seen as "warehouses" storing a large number of women resources. And Rabe's German identity, in front of the powerful Japanese army, was nothing more than a cover that could be torn away at any time. The Chinese women, however, used their bodies not only to save the men hidden in the refugee camp but also wrote a strong history of the Chinese people in front of Rabe.

The portrayal of Japanese soldiers is a major breakthrough in this movie. As occupiers, they can certainly enjoy a normal life in a certain sense. But in Nanjing, where war factors are extremely amplified, even the occupiers, even when faced with just others' humiliation and death, cannot escape the shock or questioning of their own souls.

Kakukawa (played by Eiji Nakatsu) is an ordinary soldier of the 16th Division of the Japanese army. Called a "learned person" by his teammates, he is sensitive, inexperienced, and hasn't even had a girlfriend before joining the war. His fellow countryman Captain Ita (Ryū Kin幡ban), on the other hand, is already a veteran and a professional soldier. In the "life" of being an occupier in Nanjing, Kakukawa experienced various costs to humanity required to maintain such a "life." Kakukawa ultimately made his choice: he sent two surviving Chinese people out of Nanjing and then committed suicide with his gun.

This movie completely breaks through the intentional erasure of the existence of the Chinese people and the mistaken description of "inefficient Chinese people" found in previous historical works and artistic creations about the Nanjing Massacre; providing world audiences with a new perspective to understand this history, and rewriting the national image of the Chinese people during the Nanjing disaster. It provides a new historical reflection on this painful chapter in China's history from a new height.
