◎Introduction:
The film's title refers to the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" mentioned in the Bible’s Book of Revelation, symbolizing humanity's four major calamities - war, plague, famine, and death. In the movie, Dennis Quaid plays a detective who has just lost his wife. He is tasked with investigating a series of murders and discovers that the four victims are all connected to a mysterious woman played by Ziyi Zhang. In the film, Ziyi Zhang has complex and dangerous relationships with each of the four knights, and she also develops a complicated emotional connection with Dennis Quaid during the investigation.
Aidan Breslin (played by Dennis Quaid) has suffered a great personal tragedy: his wife died in an accident, leaving behind two young children. Overwhelmed by grief, Aidan is increasingly neglecting his sons. Considering his situation, his superiors suggest he take some time off, but the burdened Aidan insists on continuing his work, believing only through confronting criminals can he gradually forget his past pain.
A series of murders occur in the city, and Aidan is assigned to investigate. During the investigation, Aidan discovers that the killer selects victims according to the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" described in the Bible: the White Knight, symbolizing war and conquest; the Red Knight, appearing innocent but filled with anger; the Black Knight, controlling darkness and death; and the Gray Knight, a precise executioner inspiring deep fear. The identities and actions of the four victims can be linked to descriptions in the Book of Revelation, suggesting the killer aims to bring about the biblical end of the world through continuous killings.
Faced with such bizarre killing methods, Aidan realizes the murderer is both twisted and unpredictable. As the investigation progresses, Aidan finds that all four victims are connected to a woman named Kristen (played by Ziyi Zhang), who might hold the key to uncovering the truth. Initially, Aidan suspects Kristen is the killer, but later he discovers that although her hands are stained with much blood, she is not the real perpetrator of these cases. Following this sole clue, Aidan continues his investigation and eventually uncovers the truth behind the entire case, which seems to have an unbreakable connection to himself.
Behind the Scenes
"The Four Sins" Trigger a Series of Murders
Many serial killers have appeared on the silver screen, and this year another movie about a serial killer has entered public view—The Horsemen. Talking about this movie, director Jonas Akerlund, who has directed many famous music videos and now transitioned to directing large-scale films, said: "This movie tells the story of a police officer's confrontation with a serial killer. It is a crime thriller inspired by the Bible’s Book of Revelation. We borrowed the description of the end of the world from it to become the method of murder in this movie. We wanted to use a different narrative style from other crime movies, so at the beginning of this movie, we tell the audience who the possible killer is, then let you watch and verify along with the protagonist whether this person is indeed the killer. I really enjoy this process of thinking. I believe it depends on the excellent performances of the actors and the excellent script. We don't want to repeat those already successful movies. From the start, I told the screenwriter Dave that this time we need to make a crime movie that hasn't been done before. Our serial killer must be the most unique one on screen. I am quite satisfied with this script, I think it gives actors a lot of room to play, and the audience won't guess the ending from the start."
When talking about the two main actors in the movie, director Jonas Akerlund praised them highly: "Dennis Quaid has quite a lot of experience on the silver screen. In The Horsemen, he plays the core character of the story, leading the audience to find the real culprit together. There are many action scenes in this movie, some of which are very dangerous, but Dennis Quaid completed them smoothly without making too many requests. Besides, there are also many challenging inner monologue scenes for actors, and Dennis Quaid performed them extremely well, leaving me nothing to criticize. Ziyi Zhang is a very beautiful and well-known actress. We chose her initially because the production company had seen her performance in Rush Hour 2 and felt she had a unique quality. She was also very interested in this role, so our cooperation this time was very pleasant. She is an Asian actress, and this time she acted in a movie entirely in English dialogue, so she made a lot of efforts. I think Ziyi Zhang is very dedicated, and she put a lot into this role."
Interaction between Chinese and American Stars on Screen
Dennis Quaid has quite rich experience on the silver screen. This time, he plays a solitary detective, and there are many action scenes in the movie, so many people doubt if his body can still handle it at over 50 years old. Regarding this role, Dennis Quaid said: "For me, playing this role feels very exhilarating. There are quite a few action scenes in the movie, so I did a lot of preparation before shooting, training my muscles for a long time, and also reviewing my driving skills. These things came in handy when officially filming the movie. There are quite a few scenes in the movie showcasing the muscles on my arms, and there are also several car chase scenes where I didn’t use a stunt double! There is also a scene in the movie where I need to chase the killer in broad daylight in the downtown area. When shooting this scene, the temperature in Mexico was very high, and the sun was scorching. I ran a long distance under the blazing sun, sweating profusely, but I felt extremely refreshed by this sweat-soaked exercise and didn't feel any hardship. If anything was difficult, it was the inner monologue scenes in the movie. The director's requirements always seemed to differ from my understanding, so we shot many scenes multiple times until the director was satisfied, which was more troublesome than the action scenes that could be done right the first time."
Regarding his collaboration with Ziyi Zhang, Dennis Quaid said: "She is an excellent actress and a highly popular big star. During the shooting, there were constantly media visits and fans screaming outside the set, and she turned out to be much more famous than I imagined. In the movie, I have some opposing scenes with her. Beforehand, we needed to communicate well, and all issues were resolved satisfactorily. Oh, I also need to thank her for something. That was during the shooting in Los Angeles when she invited me to eat Chinese food, which was dumplings. This left me with a memorable impression because I had never eaten this kind of food before."
After floating around Hollywood for several years, this is Ziyi Zhang's first transformation on the big screen, playing a mysterious killer. Compared to her previous works where her English accent was criticized, Ziyi Zhang clearly worked hard on her dialogues in The Horsemen, and audiences who watched the movie also commented that her English level improved significantly. Regarding this movie, Ziyi Zhang said: "This movie is a rare cinematic experience for me because the character I play in the movie differs greatly from my past roles, and I did a lot of preparation for this character. When studying this character, I referred to Anthony Hopkins' performance as a 'psychopath' in The Silence of the Lambs."
