Pandas Give Us a Lesson

□Zhou Ming

The film "Panda's Homecoming" co-produced by Walt Disney and a domestic film company is now being released nationwide. Almost all audiences who have watched this movie are touched by the simple and cute performances of the young lead actor Yuan Dao Da Di and the baby pandas; they also realize that the gap between us and Hollywood is not only in high technology and big productions, but even in children's films, the difference in creative concepts is very significant.

If a domestic children's film were to be made with the national treasure panda as the main character, it would probably focus the lens on the panda or the beautiful natural scenery, then shift the scene to brave children helping the panda escape from poachers' clutches, becoming little heroes who save the national treasure, completing the mission of "scenery plus science education plus punishing evil and promoting good." Although such filming is not wrong, it lacks the most important elements for children's films - fun and innocence. "Panda's Homecoming" is not perfect either; due to budget constraints, many scenes appear very crude, with low picture quality, especially the aerial shots of Sichuan's beautiful natural scenery, which always give people the feeling of being not transparent or bright enough. However, the film spends the most effort telling a story about the close relationship between pandas and humans, and the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature: the young protagonist Xiao Lu is an orphan with autism who refuses to speak, and he accidentally saves a baby panda named Pang Pang who has been separated from its parents. In his interaction with Pang Pang, Xiao Lu gradually becomes more open. Facing the danger of strangers taking away Pang Pang, Xiao Lu makes a painful decision to send Pang Pang back to its parents. In the arduous journey of sending the panda home, Xiao Lu also grows and matures, building a bridge of communication with his adoptive father, the hunter Old Chen... The road of the panda going home is also the path for Xiao Lu to bravely face life, establish an emotional bond with his adoptive father, and find a place of belonging in his heart. With two intertwined plot lines, complemented by the lovable performance of the intelligent baby panda, the film narrates a lovely and touching story. After watching the film, the audience's hearts are purified.

This seemingly simple method of storytelling for educational entertainment is actually based on a humanistic perspective. Many domestic children's films are too rigid, ultimately because they lack such a perspective. "Panda's Homecoming" gives a lesson to domestic filmmakers, teaching everyone what the most important elements are.
