This film is one of the three proletarian works by the famous Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki, titled "Shadows in Paradise," included in the US Region 1 CC Standard Edition Eclipse Series. It won the Best Picture Award at the 1986 Finnish Oscars. As the first part of the Proletariat Trilogy (also known as the "Blue Collar Trilogy," followed by "Leningrad Cowboys Go America" and "The Match Factory Girl"), its cold humor and desolate imagery are considered early representative works that began to establish Kaurismäki's cinematic style. The scavenger wandering through the city collecting scraps undoubtedly symbolizes a life of worthlessness. Only through the care of fellow downtrodden individuals can there be solace.
