The father of the main character, Honda Gorou, named Honda Shuji, was originally a professional baseball player who lost his mother at a young age. When Gorou was five, his father was hit in the head by a beanball from Jody Gibson during a game and passed away due to a brain hematoma. Afterwards, Gorou was adopted by his kindergarten teacher, Momoe Hoshino (Shuji's girlfriend). At the age of nine, Shuji's classmate and fellow professional baseball player, Shigeru Shigeno, married Momoe Hoshino, and Honda Gorou's last name was changed to Shigeno.
