The Battle of Red Cliff is one of the most famous battles in Chinese history where a weaker force triumphed over a stronger one. In 208 AD (the thirteenth year of Jian'an during Emperor Xian of Han's reign), Cao Cao led a massive army, both on land and water, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, to launch the Campaign of Jingzhou, and then proceeded to attack Sun Quan.
In the autumn of July, Cao Cao personally led an army of more than ten thousand soldiers southward toward Jingzhou, as Wang Fuzhi wrote in *Readings on Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government*, "taking advantage of the momentum after defeating Yuan Shao to conquer Jing and Wu." His goal was to eliminate Liu Biao and Sun Quan of Jiangdong in one swift move, thereby unifying the entire empire. As Cao Cao advanced rapidly towards Wan and Ye, Liu Biao fell ill and passed away in August. In September, Liu Biao's second son, Liu Cong, surrendered without a fight in Xinye (now part of Henan Province) to Cao Cao's forces. The numerous warships of the Jingzhou navy, including countless assault boats and warships, all fell into Cao Cao's hands, significantly enhancing his naval combat capabilities.
Liu Bei, who had been stationed in Fancheng (modern-day Xiangfan, Hubei) under Liu Biao’s protection, retreated south upon hearing the news. At that time, Jiangling (modern-day Jiangling, Hubei) held a large stockpile of grain, weapons, and other supplies belonging to Liu Biao. Therefore, Liu Bei began retreating from Fancheng toward Jiangling while simultaneously ordering Guan Yu to lead the navy along the Han River to rendezvous at Jiangling.
