Master Yip Man was from the Ye clan of Sang Garden, Foshan. At the age of seven, he became a disciple of Chan Wah Shun (who was a distinguished disciple of Master Leung Jan, the boxing king of Nanhai).
At that time, Chan Wah Shun was already advanced in years, several decades older than Yip Man. Therefore, Yip Man respectfully called him "Uncle Hua". Chan Wah Shun had a soft spot for this young disciple. After taking Yip Man as his student, he stopped accepting any new disciples. Thus, Yip Man became Chan Wah Shun's closing-the-door disciple. His elder fellow disciples such as Ng Chung-sok, Chan Ru-mien, and Lei Gong-chi took extra good care of this young junior brother. After Uncle Hua passed away, Yip Man continued to study martial arts with his senior fellow disciple Ng Chung-sok. When Yip Man was sixteen years old, he left Foshan for Hong Kong to study foreign languages at St. Stephen's College.
