In the early 1970s, Chuncao was born into a peasant family in Mengwan Town deep in the mountains of southern Jiangnan. She had an elder brother and a younger brother; women in her family were utterly without status. From a young age, she was not allowed to go to school, nor could she be capricious or spoiled. Aside from hard labor, there was no joy in her life at all. But she possessed a character trait that would influence her entire life: stubbornness, and refusal to admit defeat. With the dream of living a good life at heart, she refused to submit to fate. She struggled and fought for herself, finding her own husband, making her own way in the world, leaving home to work, starting businesses, becoming wealthy, failing, rising again from the east, failing again, and starting over again. Time and time again, she endured hardships, eating bitterness until she was full. From countryside to city, from peddler to cleaner to nanny, Chuncao struggled, fought, endured, and persevered without losing heart or giving up, and she even refrained from complaining. She worked tirelessly, refusing to accept her lot, dreaming and hoping.
