78-year-old Carl Fredricksen, once a balloon vendor, is voiced by Edward Asner. He met his wife Ellie, voiced by Elissa Knight, when they were both children. Ellie grew up in a small town in the Midwest and always dreamed of traveling to South America. Unfortunately, this dream was never realized before her death.

One day, property developers arrive, meaning Carl has to leave the house where he lived with Ellie, prompting him to decide to fulfill Ellie's dream and his promise to her. Carl creates a flying house using ten thousand balloons and unintentionally brings 8-year-old Russell, voiced by Jordan Nagai, into the house. Russell is an Asian-American chubby boy who calls himself a "Wilderness Explorer." This mismatched pair takes to the skies in the "flying house," and after being hit by a storm, they safely land in South America. During their journey through the wilderness, they encounter unexpected villains and a terrifying "monster" lurking in the Venezuelan jungle, but also make new friends. The adventure that follows is even more fascinating and hilarious, leaving people in stitches.
