Shen Dianxia's Background

Renowned artist Shen Dianxia passed away at 8:38 AM on the morning of January 19th, at the age of 60. She was transferred from the intensive care unit of Mary Hospital to a private ward a few days ago but began showing signs of confusion before ultimately succumbing to her illness. Shen had long suffered from diabetes and hypertension. In August 2007, she was hospitalized for bile duct surgery and subsequently developed liver issues. Let’s take a look at Shen Dianxia’s background.

Born in 1945 in Shanghai, China, into an affluent family, Shen later moved to Hong Kong to pursue her career. She became a celebrated Hong Kong actress and host. Known for her exceptionally full figure and cheerful, optimistic demeanor, she was affectionately nicknamed “Fatty” and "Happy Fruit." Her appearance was also marked by an unchanging hairstyle over the years and her signature black-rimmed glasses with upward-pointing tips.

In 1958, she moved to Hong Kong and made her debut as a child star in the movie *A Tree Blossoms Red* in 1960, which brought her fame. She went on to star in countless films, often in supporting roles, yet her comedic performances were well-known and guaranteed box office success. In the 1970s, she formed the "Couple Singing Troupe" with Roman Tam and joined the all-female vocal group "The Four Golden Flowers" alongside Nancy Wong, Esther Cheung (formerly known as Cheung Yuen-Yuen), and Vivian Tong. She also gained immense popularity while shooting TV dramas in Singapore.

In the 1970s, she teamed up with Chen Ziqiang, Chen Hao, Deng Guangming, Qin Xianglin, and Situ Hsin to form the wildly popular "Silver Rat Team," which swept across Hong Kong and Taiwan. Starting her screen career at the age of 15, Shen spent over four decades in the entertainment industry, starring in nearly a hundred films and TV series. She hosted Hong Kong's top-rated variety show *Tonight is the Night* for two decades, earning her the title of Hong Kong's premier female emcee. Her warm, endearing, open-minded, kind, and humorous image won her the nickname "Hong Kong's Happy Fruit," and she was selected as Hong Kong's "International Children Ambassador." However, what resonated most deeply with the public was her unique hosting style—witty, light-hearted, and distinctive—which made her a pillar of the long-running TVB variety show *Tonight is the Night*.
