At 1:00 AM Beijing Time on July 8 (10:00 AM local time in the U.S.), the public memorial service for the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, USA. Several major American news agencies covered the event live, making it the largest celebrity funeral in history. Although U.S. President Obama was on a state visit to Russia, he still sent a condolence telegram in the name of his family. Millions of fans around the world watched the Jackson memorial service through various means such as the Internet, mobile phones, and television.

Nearly 22,000 people attended the memorial service on site. Prior to this, the Jackson family held a private funeral for Michael Jackson at the Forest Lawn Cemetery.
