He chose desolate landscapes with quietly rising moons, streets in Moscow, train stations in Kiev, Stalinist architecture and gaudy subways, and the atmosphere of Petersburg. Unlike his British predecessors, this German photographer was not only concerned with the contrast between destruction and perfection, but more importantly, he discovered unity within contradictions, thereby presenting the characteristics of his era through special symbols. He rescued the models from their powdered veneer, revealing secular traits.
