Robert Mapplethorpe was an artist who created new concepts of gender through his images. In mainstream visual art, male artists are the subjects who do the looking, while the female body, especially the beautiful female body, is the object being looked at. Female artists have complained that women can only enter art galleries when their bodies are exposed.
