Chen Shilin created a myth of red images. Relying on his darkroom skills, he processed and made standard portraits of Mao Zedong at different stages of his life, each inheriting the other, never aging, so that when Mao Zedong entered his later years, no matter how the pictures were retouched, he "didn't look like Chairman anymore." The red images created by Chen Shilin have had a wide influence around the world. The standard portrait of Chairman Mao made by Chen Shilin, exhibited and sold by the Gary.Edwards Gallery in Washington, was displayed at the 2011 New York Photography Fair.
