“Vanity Fair” was originally the name of a novel by 19th century British writer William Makepeace Thackeray. In 1913, as an immigrant country, America's unique cultural tradition was still in the process of formation. The affluent Americans desired to understand the world and aspired to be elegant and cultivated individuals. They admired Europe's cultural traditions, but only a few could personally travel across the ocean to broaden their horizons and gain worldly experience. The majority could only learn about the world through reading books, newspapers, and magazines. It was precisely this psychology of the American public that Condé Nast把握ed, leading to the launch of Vanity Fair magazine.
