Liu Xiangcheng: I think the book "China After Mao" describes the era after the chairman passed away in 1976, followed by 1978 when Mr. Deng Xiaoping proposed a brand-new agenda at the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee - that China would undergo economic reform. From 1978 when I first arrived in China to 1983, I believe this was an era of transition. This picture, on the cover, suggests to me that through this young man it seems to portray a new direction, a transcendence from the past. Behind, under Mao Zedong's established path, he skates past history. Chairman Mao, in the new China, was the most iconic figure who influenced several generations of us. Therefore, this picture is representative in its own way.
