The situation of students forgetting the structure of a character once they pick up a pen and having messy handwriting is becoming increasingly serious. On December 3, the National Language Committee revealed that China will introduce a student Chinese character writing standard for primary through tertiary schools to regulate Chinese character writing.
Wang Dengfeng, Deputy Director of the National Language Committee and Director of the Department of Language and Character Application Management in the Ministry of Education said that with the widespread application of computer text entry technology, people have fewer opportunities to write with pens, but Chinese character writing should still be a basic skill in learning and working. China is currently developing a Chinese character writing standard for primary and secondary school students, which requires students to not only recognize and write characters, but also to write them in a standardized way and beautifully.
According to reports, the current language course standards for Chinese primary and secondary schools already propose requirements for Chinese character writing, but there are no specific evaluation indicators. Some primary and secondary schools in various places have explored pilot programs related to this work, achieving good results and receiving wide acclaim from parents and students alike. They believe that further promotion of this work will help young people write standardized and beautiful Chinese characters and enhance their cultural heritage.
"We don't expect everyone to become a calligrapher, but the promotion of the Chinese character writing standard will enable young people to acquire basic skills while inheriting the traditional Chinese art of calligraphy," Wang Dengfeng said. "The Chinese character writing standard will propose principled requirements for what level each grade should reach."
He indicated that the Chinese character writing ability standard for college students is also under consideration. "In addition, oral communication and reading and writing abilities for college students will all be improved according to the standard."
It was learned that China will start with the Chinese character writing standard and continue to explore the establishment of a comprehensive student Chinese language ability evaluation system to promote greater attention from teachers and students to improving Chinese language application abilities.
