The Experience of a Naive Webmaster
I was born after the 80s, and I got in touch with computers quite early. But up until now, I still have nothing to show for it; I am still a naive webmaster!
In 2000, when I was in junior high school third year, that was the first time I touched a computer, and what I did was play CS (Counter-Strike) game. Back then, I had never even touched a computer before, I didn't even know how to walk in the game, bumping into walls everywhere! At that time, internet access cost 3 yuan/hour, and it was just a local area network (LAN), there was no internet connection yet. In 2002, when we could finally get online, my older brother had just graduated from university. After graduation, he taught computers at a school. Since he was helping the school build its website, I had the good fortune to see his process of creating websites right by his side, and from that moment on, I fell deeply in love with making websites. Not long after, under his guidance, I found a free hosting service and uploaded my first personal webpage. My brother was my first teacher in the world of networks!
Up until today, I've already made many websites. I don't even remember how many, back then it was all for fun. My friends were all playing games, while I was playing around with making webpages. Friends would say, "You're amazing!" Hearing those praises, I felt sweet inside, but they didn't know that I didn't know how to play games. I kept making websites non-stop, promoting them non-stop. The other day, my Special Forces External Website (www.tzbin.cn) was established once again, using FengXun CMS, which I find pretty easy to use! It's just not finished yet.
Now let me share some personal insights about building websites as a naive webmaster like me:
One:
Choosing Hosting and Domain: First, talking about choosing hosting services, currently there are still many free hosting options available. For beginners, choosing these for learning purposes is not bad, you don't waste money, and gain some experience. However, free things always come with disadvantages - instability and slowness, which is what people often refer to as "there's no such thing as a free lunch." You can make do with it if you must. If you want to purchase hosting, you can choose reputable hosting providers, try out their services, and conduct further tests until you find a satisfactory one. A slow hosting service will not attract users unless it's your girlfriend's personal webpage, and even then only out of necessity. So this step is very important. Regarding domain selection, beginners can choose someone else's second or third-level domains for learning purposes, without wasting money unnecessarily. But if you want to do something substantial and own this domain for a long term, you can register one. The domain suffix must be .com. Otherwise, you might regret it for a lifetime.
Two:
Choosing the Right Direction for Construction: What you are doing is not a comprehensive portal site, nor another Baidu. You are just a personal website, so focus on this goal and work towards it. Of course, you need to have proficient knowledge of web design and graphic processing. The most important aspects of website construction are undoubtedly design and content. However, experience is gained through practical application, so beginners should not be intimidated or discouraged by this. Practice more, and you will improve.
Three:
Matters to Note in Technical Application:
Clearly define that technology serves the design, resolutely avoid those fancy but useless special effects; don't become obsessed with the use of new technologies.
First, define a unified external CSS for your site, and all internal pages call this CSS. This way, your webpage won't deform when browser settings are changed, it helps maintain a consistent style across the entire site, and makes modifications easier.
Image creation needs to balance size and aesthetics. Mixing images with text, properly compressing images can make the page both aesthetically pleasing and compact. Even for highly personalized design sites, wasting too much time on page downloads can be annoying.
Don't open too many new windows, opening a different new window for each link is especially irritating;
Avoid using Java Applets, because they consume too many system resources;
Optimize webpage code as much as possible.
Consider platform compatibility: Make your homepage as compatible as possible with more operating systems and browsers, adaptable to different resolutions. To achieve this, you need to do more testing on different platforms and modify your design based on test results. Even if complete compatibility cannot be achieved, strive to ensure that users on incompatible platforms can still see the most critical content;
Always remember the sharing principle of the Internet, don't attempt to encrypt your webpage by disabling right-click functions, etc. These trivial techniques are mostly easily breakable, and will only cause you to lose more supporters;
Four: Development and Promotion Period:
The real hard work begins after the website is uploaded and released. The next steps require more patience and perseverance. Webmaster = Migrant Worker.
Continuously add new content to the site to maintain strong development momentum. Strive for more return visitors;
Enhance the interactivity of the site, such as leaving messages, forum discussions. Exchange links with other webmasters.
