At 20:58:13 (Beijing Time) on June 5, 2010, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake occurred in Yangqu County, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province (38.20 degrees north latitude, 112.70 degrees east longitude). The hypocentral depth was 5.0 km.
Despite lasting only a few short seconds, the earthquake was distinctly felt in urban Taiyuan, and some residents quickly went downstairs to open spaces on the ground; other citizens drove away from their residences. Following the earthquake, telephone services were unavailable for a period of time.
