On July 22, 2009, a rare total solar eclipse will occur in the Yangtze River basin of our country, lasting for more than 6 minutes. It is one of the most spectacular astronomical phenomena that Chinese people in the 21st century can witness. At that time, four organizations including National Astronomical Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Microsoft Research Asia, Computer Network Information Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences will jointly carry out a live broadcast activity of the total solar eclipse for the global public. It is planned to set up multiple live broadcast points within the path of totality, transmitting the digital high-definition video signals of the solar eclipse from these live broadcast points to the Beijing live broadcast center through the CNGI next-generation Internet experimental system, and then releasing them free of charge to the whole world through broadcasting communication satellites, the Internet, and other methods. At that time, various media such as TV stations, online portals, mobile program service providers, mobile TVs, etc., can receive this signal source and make it into a live program to present to the global public. We believe that this live broadcast of the total solar eclipse will become the most anticipated astronomical feast of the public in 2009.
