In the third year of Tongzhi (1864 AD), during the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Rebellion, General Lin Wenhao of Fujian Province had been fighting on the battlefield for years. Taking advantage of a brief return to Taiwan to visit his wife and children, he unexpectedly discovered that his wife Baoxia, unable to endure the prolonged loneliness of her husband's absence, had decided to elope with Zhu Shigui, a close friend of Lin Wenhao for many years. After much internal struggle, Lin Wenhao decided to let Baoxia go. Thereafter, he was left alone, raising his daughter Lin Yuhuan while continuing to fight the Taiping Army on the battlefield in service to his country.
