Chen Shui-bian was released without bail in the early morning of December 13 after being prosecuted for corruption. Aids of Chen's office said on December 14 that Chen would go to his office to work on the morning of December 15.

Release affects enterprises' willingness to surrender

According to reports, after Chen was released, his office had contacted him by telephone and the aids hoped he could have a rest for one or two days and be with his family. Other relevant subsequent problems would be discussed until he returned to his office.

It was reported that the release of Chen Shui-bian made the senior procurators of Taiwan quite worried. They said that this might affect the investigation of the case involving Chen Shui-bian, especially affecting the willingness of enterprises to surrender.

It was learned that after the procuratorate requested and was approved by Taipei Court to put Chen Shui-bian under custody, the number of Taiwanese enterprises which surrendered increased obviously. For example, Ku Chung-liang who had been wanted and fled to Japan for more than 2 years because of the "Honghuo" case returned to Taiwan to testify, and high level executives of many holding financial enterprises in Taiwan also went to the special investigating team voluntarily one after another to explain the case situation.

Now that Chen Shui-bian has been released, it will affect to some extent the subsequent investigation into the case involving the second financial reform carried out by the special investigating team.

May apply for putting Chen Shui-bian under custody again
