What are monks, nuns, and lay followers?

The term "和尚" in the Chinese mind is just like the identity of a monk: 'sitting with the emperor on one side, and walking with beggars on the other'. It can be both noble and humble. The head of a large monastery is called the Abbot, which is so dignified; yet, out of fear that their sons may not survive, country folk sometimes name them "和尚", treating the word "和尚" as equivalent to names for dogs or cats, how utterly humble is that!
