The Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese festival, which could date back to more than 2000 years ago in the Western Han Dynasty. The lanterns-gazing on the night of the Lantern Festival started from the reign of Emperor Ming in the Eastern Han Dynasty. As a advocator of Buddhism, Emperor Ming heard that Buddhist monks would watch sarira and light lamps to show respect for Buddha on the 15th day of the first lunar month, so he decreed that all palaces and temples light lamps to show respect for Buddha and all scholars, families hang red lanterns on that night. Later, this Buddhist ceremony developed into a grand folk festival gradually. This festival experienced a development process from the palace to the folk, and from the Central Plains to the whole country.
