Today, the region of Kashgar, north of Yengisar County and including today's Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture of Kizilsu, has been known in Chinese historical records since the Han Dynasty as the "Shule Kingdom" of the Western Regions. From the Wei and Jin Dynasties to the Song Dynasty, the territory of the "Shule Kingdom" also included the area south of today's Shache County to Pishan County. The capital of the Shule Kingdom was called "Shule City" during the Western Han Dynasty, which is today's Kashgar City. In ancient Xinjiang, this phenomenon of a city-state or regional authority being called a "country" persisted until the Ming Dynasty, as stated in the "Ming History • Western Regions Biography": "Large territories are called countries, smaller ones are only referred to as areas", formally similar to the feudal principalities of the royal families in the inland areas of China, and should not be confused with the concept of "nation" that we understand today; just like the 800 feudal states in the Zhou Dynasty and the seven states during the Warring States period, they were all local authorities under the central government established by the Chinese nation.
