Misconception One: The whiter the Hetian jade, the better it is.
According to jade carving master Su Ran, in fact, the whiter the Hetian jade is, it doesn't necessarily mean it's better - Russian white jade has a higher degree of whiteness than Hetian jade, but its price is much lower than that of Hetian jade; some mountain Hetian jade is whiter than pebble Hetian jade, but the average price of mountain material is much lower than that of pebble material. Moreover, Hetian itself produces yellow jade and black jade, and the price of yellow jade is often much higher than that of white Hetian jade. The primary standard for high-quality Hetian jade should be its delicate and smooth texture, rather than its degree of whiteness.
