According to a report by China News Service on January 3, "After more than a year of research and investigation, the much anticipated jade material for the Beijing Olympic medals has finally been decided. On January 2, 2008, the Qinghai provincial government held a donation ceremony in Beijing for the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympics. More than 3000 Olympic medals will all use Kunlun jade from Qinghai, and these jade pieces will be processed by the end of March...".

In the November 2003 revised "National Jewelry and Gemstone Standards", it was clearly re-specified that the name "Hetian jade" can be used. Hetian jade has evolved from a place name into the name of a natural jade species, and no longer carries the meaning of a place of origin.
