"The Living Soldier" txt e-book free download introduces the events of 1937, when the Anti-Japanese War broke out. People from the lowest levels of society, such as D Tie Liu, Mabaoye, Magulaou, Zhuanggulaou (a Zhuang person), Shanyao Lao, and Shuiyao Lao, all joined the army with the simple hope of having enough food to eat and clothes to keep warm.

This ragtag army not only had to fight against the well-equipped Japanese soldiers in life-and-death battles but also had to be wary of being sacrificed by their own side for the greater good. Yet they were often hungry and cold, without heavy machine guns or artillery. They relied on their sabers and shouts to terrify the enemy, and if necessary, would sacrifice themselves by fighting the enemy to the death.

The author's grandfather recounted the legendary years of his comrades-in-arms with a heavy heart and a sense of mourning. A battalion of 500 men conducted 20 flanking maneuvers and participated in 10 campaigns, yet only one soldier survived. However, the battalion of 500 never truly left. Every Qingming Festival and Chongyang Festival, the grandfather would raise the battle flag and offer a pot of turbid wine in memory of those fallen soldiers who still "live" on.
