"The Living Soldier" txt e-book free download introduces the events of 1937, when the Anti-Japanese War broke out. People from the lowest levels of society, such as Dialect Liu, Mabao Ye, Mabao Lao, Zhuanggu Lao (a person of the Zhuang ethnic group), Mountain Yao Lao, and Water Yao Lao, all joined the army with the simple hope of having enough food to eat and clothes to keep warm.

This ragtag army not only had to fight for their lives against the well-equipped Japanese forces, but also had to be wary of being sacrificed by their own side in order to protect others. Despite this, they often went hungry and cold, lacking heavy machine guns and artillery. They relied on their sabers and shouts to intimidate the enemy, and if necessary, would sacrifice themselves by fighting the enemy to the death.

The author's grandfather recounted the legendary anti-Japanese stories of his comrades with a heavy heart and in mourning. The 500-man battalion endured 20 flanking maneuvers and fought in 10 campaigns, leaving only one soldier alive, yet the 500-man battalion was never truly gone. Every Qingming Festival and Chongyang Festival, the grandfather would raise the battle flag and offer a pot of turbid wine in memory of those fallen soldiers who were still "alive" in spirit.
