Chapter One: Tropical Jungle Section One: Ambush

Dawn, the subtropical sunlight filters through the gaps between the leaves and softly shines on the ground covered with grass and shrubs. A gentle breeze stirs up the white mist hovering on the tips of the grass, causing it to flow with the wind. The humid air in the subtropical rainforest is so damp that it feels like you can wring water out of it. A new day has begun.

A faint sound of hooves broke the tranquility of dawn. A convoy consisting of Yunnan short-legged horses laden with goods and more than twenty armed personnel slowly approached. They were dressed in mottled jungle camouflage uniforms, wearing jungle combat boots, and sporting anti-mosquito helmets, though the mosquito nets on their helmets were rolled up. Their collars and cuffs were tightly tied, their faces smeared with camouflage greasepaint, and they held AK-74U assault rifles, about eight-tenths new, as they cautiously walked forward, occasionally stopping to carefully listen for any unusual sounds around them. It was clear they were seasoned veterans of the jungle.
