"The General with a Red Face" First Crosses to the East
In 1903 (the 29th year of Qing Guangxu, like month), Chiang Kai-shek went to Ningbo for an examination and at the same time changed his name to Zhiquing. Since then, few people mentioned the name "Jiang Ruiyuan" again.
After Chiang Kai-shek set off for the exam, Mrs. Jiang, Mao Fumei, prayed daily in front of the statue of Guanyin with her mother-in-law, asking the compassionate Bodhisattva to protect her husband and ensure he would soon achieve success and return home in glory. However, before any good news arrived, Chiang Kai-shek had already returned disgruntled, having failed the exam and not made the list, with a frosty expression on his face.
