Since the late 1980s, with the deepening of reform and opening-up, Chinese society has been moving towards an economic society. The market economy has brought about deconstructive changes to China's social structure. In terms of culture, this is manifested in that films need to talk about box office revenue, publications need to be self-financing, and the phenomenon of elite culture dominating no longer exists. There are more things oriented towards ordinary readers, entertainment culture flourishes, popular culture rises, and the popular reading trend in the 1990s presents features very different from those in the 1980s, or "it can be called hard materiality." Zhang Yiwu made such an expression. Chen Xiaoming, on the other hand, is more willing to name this kind of reading as "fragmented" reading. In his view, this reading also presents a distinct differentiation theme.
