Where is the faith of the Chinese people?

A foreign friend once asked me, what do the majority of Chinese people believe in? I thought about it and answered him: "Buddhism". My understanding of his question is that what the most Chinese people believe in should be Buddhism! In China, the main beliefs are Buddhism and Taoism. But in terms of proportion, Buddhism is definitely more popular. However, after careful consideration, it seems not entirely true. On some Buddhist holidays, there are countless people going to the temple to burn incense. Of course, big temples don't need to be mentioned, but even in small temples, the first stick of incense is highly sought after. Geographically speaking, there are more people who believe in burning incense and worshiping Buddha in places like Guangdong. The richer the place, the more people do this. Modern people have all studied science and don't believe in ghosts and gods, so why do they burn incense and pray to gods? Some say they pray for peace and safety. Does burning one stick of incense mean you will be safe for a lifetime? It's not that mysterious! I think what they seek is peace of mind!
