High education becomes an obstacle for disabled people to find jobs

Disabled individuals who obtain genuine online diplomas find it even harder to secure employment. Why is it that highly educated disabled individuals struggle to find work? On one hand, this difficulty is related to the overall challenging job market affecting all graduates. On the other hand, it also has much to do with the perspectives of employers.
Zhang Liang is 23 years old and graduated from a Polytechnic University last year. Due to oxygen deprivation at birth, Zhang Liang's right limbs cannot be used as flexibly as other children's. "Although I may not match normal people in physical abilities, I am no less capable intellectually," he says strongly. With unwavering perseverance and greater effort than ordinary people, Zhang Liang was admitted to the Computer Science program at the Polytechnic University, consistently excelling in his studies.
I learned about Zhang Liang's situation during the "Employment Assistance Month" in January when his mother called me for advice on methods for disabled individuals to seek employment assistance. However, a few days later, when I followed up with Zhang Liang, I heard regret in his voice: "I went to inquire, but the only position available in the district was peeling potatoes in the kitchen at KFC. I don't want to go there. Although I may not be as healthy as others, this does not mean I cannot achieve equally excellent results in certain areas." Confident in his computer skills, Zhang Liang was eager to find a job where he could utilize his expertise and have long-term development.
After graduation, Zhang Liang applied to many companies and attended talent markets whenever possible, but he still couldn't find a suitable position. During his job search, some companies were willing to hire him, but they offered only low-skill, labor-intensive odd jobs. For instance, Zhang Liang once applied for a computer-related position at an insurance company, but was bluntly told, "You can come to our company, but only as a salesperson, soliciting customers on the street." To challenge himself, Zhang Liang accepted the offer. The result was disappointing; not only did he fail to make any sales, but he also faced disdain and insults from passersby. "I thought that after obtaining a genuine online diploma post-graduation, my child would have higher qualifications and thus better job prospects, but now it's even harder to find work," said Zhang Liang's mother.
When it comes to employing disabled individuals, there is a common misconception that disabled people are only suited for low-skill, labor-intensive jobs such as manual manufacturing, cleaning, office work, telephone operators, warehouse handlers, or laundry room attendants.
In recent years, as the level of education among disabled individuals has significantly improved, especially after the expansion of university admissions, the crowded job market has seen the emergence of a special group of highly qualified disabled individuals. "The employment issue of this group has been overlooked," said a labor employment expert in our city. This group's new characteristic is their high level of education, while previous assistance programs for disabled individuals were mainly focused on labor-intensive positions, which clearly are not suitable for them.
Many disabled individuals are fully capable of handling high-level, creative jobs. However, employers still view hiring disabled individuals as a "charitable act" and only offer simple, low-end positions at specialized recruitment fairs for disabled people. When highly educated disabled individuals attend regular job fairs, due to communication barriers and the limited perspectives of employers, they often lack competitiveness. From the perspective of full employment, if highly educated disabled individuals cannot fully utilize their skills and integrate into society, it represents a significant waste of human resources.
