These are often combined with lotus flowers in patterns on porcelain, first appearing in the Yuan dynasty and becoming popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties. They were introduced from Tibetan Lamaism. As people see them as a sign of good luck, they became widely used on porcelain and other crafts.
