Some cities in China's coastal areas and along the Yangtze River were more influenced by Western culture, and some buildings that appeared in these cities became typical examples of "Western-style" architecture in modern Chinese architecture during this period. However, most inland cities in China during the same period, due to their relative isolation from the outside world, continued to strongly exhibit traditional Chinese architectural culture; only a few cities, benefited by favorable conditions, also saw the construction of some "Western-style" buildings.
