"At 00:30 yesterday morning,"

A crack captured a photo of a UFO flying across the sky from left to right. He stated, "At that time, the UFO was also rotating while flying." The reader provided the picture.

[Local News Report] Last night, Hong Kong recorded over 25,000 lightning strikes within six hours, breaking records. Streaks of bright light accompanied by thunder broke through the night sky, resembling scenes from the movie "War of the Worlds" before the arrival of aliens. This attracted many citizens to look up and capture this astronomical spectacle, unintentionally discovering an "unidentified flying object" (UFO). The Observatory confirmed receiving at least five reports of UFO sightings. Together with other reports on the internet, witnesses were almost spread throughout Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and the New Territories. That night might have been the one with the most simultaneous UFO sightings in Hong Kong's history! Reporters: Lin Junchuan, Wen Wenxue.

There were multiple UFO sighting reports and images circulating on the internet yesterday. Among them, the clearest picture was taken by A crack at Tai Lam. "After this incident, I began to believe that there really are UFOs and extraterrestrials in the world!" Recalling his encounter with the UFO, he could not hide his excitement: "At 12:30 AM that day, it was thundering and lightning. I took a bus to the Tai Lam Tunnel exit and waited for the bus back to Tin Shui Wai. I had my camera with me and wanted to photograph the lightning, but unexpectedly, I saw a glowing UFO appear."

“It slowly moved and rotated while flying.” The 19-year-old A crack described his "one-minute date" with the UFO as both strange and unforgettable. Later, he uploaded the photos to the internet, but they were questioned by some people who thought it was just a reflection of lights. Some netizens even claimed that the UFO in the photo was just a set of circular streetlights. However, A crack insisted it was a UFO: “At that time, the unknown object hovered in the sky for a moment, then slowly moved from left to right across the sky, and it was also rotating while flying, which was very magical.” A few minutes later, when the bus arrived, he immediately went to the upper deck near the window to look for it, but the UFO had already disappeared.

Around the same time, our newspaper's reader Herry also took a photo of a UFO in Wan Chai, and it was extremely similar to the UFO in A crack’s photo, composed of eight sets of circular lights. He said: “Around 1 o'clock in the morning, I originally wanted to take pictures of lightning, but then I saw the UFO flying above Victoria Harbour.”

Herry's photo of the UFO resembled streetlights, but he emphasized that the UFO was actually flying and quickly disappeared, so it couldn't be streetlights.

In addition to Tai Lam and Wan Chai, many netizens claimed to have seen UFOs yesterday, including locations such as Tung Chung, Yau Tong, and Sai Kung. On the social networking site Facebook, some netizens suspected they had filmed a short video of a UFO, but later clarified that it was just streetlights.

The Observatory reported receiving five UFO sighting reports from citizens, all occurring last night, including a group of eight white luminous objects hovering over Happy Valley, V-shaped luminous objects flying through the clouds over Lok Ma Chau, and a high-speed flying round yellow luminous object over Kwai Chung. There was also one report each from Wan Chai and the western New Territories, but no details were provided.

Rebuttal pointing to "ball lightning" - Scientific Officer Hu Hongjun of the Observatory explained that since all the sighting reports did not include photos, it is difficult to confirm the source of the UFOs, but they will be recorded. Regarding the claim online that the Observatory's meteorological surveillance lens captured UFOs, Hu Hongjun explained that the lens was located in Cheung Chau. Since the luminous body continuously appeared in the lens for several hours without moving, it was likely due to light source reflection or obstruction of the lens.

Including these five reports, there have been 30 UFO sighting reports this year, 49 in 2009, and 45 in 2008. In 2007, there were only 9 cases. Hu Hongjun pointed out that most cases after investigation turned out to be caused by stars, planets, artificial satellites, airplanes, sky lanterns, glowing kites, or ground spotlights.

However, some people rebutted that the UFOs seen last night were a meteorological phenomenon known as "ball lightning" (ball lightning), which can appear during thunderstorms and float and stay in the air for more than 10 minutes. The high temperature generated by the current can produce strong light, thus leading people to mistakenly think it is a UFO. Nevertheless, the controversy surrounding "ball lightning" itself is not less than that of UFOs, with some scholars questioning whether ball lightning is just a hallucination triggered by magnetic field stimulation of the brain or retina.

The Hong Kong UFO Society received multiple sighting reports yesterday, but President Fang Zhongman described it as commonplace: "The day before yesterday was not a special day like a solar or lunar eclipse, so it wouldn’t suddenly bring a lot of UFOs to Earth."

She explained that the tens of thousands of lightning strikes last night attracted more people to look up at the sky. The strong light made the sky brighter, making it easier for people to notice UFOs, hence the multiple sighting reports.

Citizen Herry of Wan Chai captured the UFO flying from right to left in Wan Chai and then disappearing, believing it could not be streetlights. Picture provided by the reader.

The No.1 monitoring lens of the Observatory in Cheung Chau captured a luminous object at 9 PM the previous evening (black and white picture), which disappeared the next day (right picture). Scientific Officer Hu Hongjun of the Observatory denied it was a UFO, stating it was due to light source reflection obstructing the lens. Observatory picture
