Mozilla's Arun Ranganathan has submitted a draft to the W3C for a JavaScript API that would allow JavaScript scripts to manipulate local files directly. The API is already heavily supported in the latest browser versions of Firefox, but for security reasons, the API will only provide limited access to local files.
