A List Apart: Breaking the gridlock of grid design

Late one night in November, I was flying over my hometown of Tucson, Arizona, and I was struck by the layout of the city network. Tucson is one of the most planned cities in the United States. From above, everything in this city has been carefully laid out by designers (Figure 1). London's urban layout (Figure 2) twists and turns, making it look more like it came naturally.
