Poulsen, often referred to as "Dark Dante," became nationally famous for hacking into the KIIS-FM phone line in Los Angeles, which also earned him a Porsche. Even the Federal Bureau of Investigation began pursuing Mr. Paulson after he broke into its databases and federal computers to obtain sensitive wiretap information.
Paulson's specialty was hacking into phone lines, and he used to take over a cell tower, and he used to take over all the phone lines in a cell tower. Mr. Paulson also regularly reactivated phone numbers in the Yellow Pages and offered them to his associates to sell. He was eventually arrested in a supermarket and sentenced to five years in prison.
While in prison, Paulsen worked as a reporter for Wired magazine, rising to senior editor. In one of his most famous articles, he describes how he found 744 sex offenders through Myspace profiles.
