The Opera Software desktop team has revealed that the new Opera 10 has taken shape, and the first Alpha version will be available soon.

In fact, Opera 10 development was planned as early as mid-2006 after the official release of Opera 9.0, but nothing has been heard since then, only to see Opera 9.x series all the way up to 9.62.

Opera 10, codenamed "Peregrine", will use a new version of the Presto 2.2 rendering engine (now 2.1.1), as well as adding some new user-relevant features and improving overall performance.

If nothing else, Opera 10 Alpha will launch this month, possibly even by the end of the week. Of course, it's only an initial preview beta, so don't expect too many surprises.
