Richard "rick752" Petnel (July 3, 1952 - April 3, 2009), maintainer of EasyList, the Firefox ad-blocking add-on Ad Block Plus filter, died Friday at the age of 56 after an illness. Petnel is a mechanic and spends most of his spare time maintaining Ad Block Plus. The Washington Post wrote about him in 2008: The effort to block millions of Internet ads has been praised by users and helped improve the browsing experience, but it has also angered and worried people who rely on advertising revenue. Richard says he doesn't make any money from his work. He's just tired of all the malware and spyware ads on his computer. He admits his approach is a bit extreme, but his success is remarkable - the plugin has been downloaded 45 million times. According to the adblockplus blog, there are already several candidates and Rick's successor will be announced at a later date.
