Sony expects to launch a laptop with a 3D display in 2011.

"3D VAIO will be available next spring," Sony Chief Executive Howard Stringer said at a 3D technology press conference.

The laptop's screen needs to be able to display 240 pages per second to maintain 60 pages per second of 3D. Sony would not say which chip was used, and cautioned that the final product might not look like the prototype shown.

What sets Sony apart from its competitors is that it also has its own content. The company also plans to launch its own 3-D TV channels, including natural history, children's programming, science and animation, Stringer said. Sony Pictures also plans to release a series of 3D films.

"Shooting in 3D is not a guarantee of success, it's about how you tell a story. A hit will still be a hit, just a bigger hit in 3D." Stringer said.
