Flash, aah, aah! It will save all of us!

Samsung has announced that it has developed the world's first 64Gb (8GB) NAND flash memory chip using the 30nm process, which opens the door for the company to manufacture up to 128GB of memory and solid-state drives (SSDS)!

With the increasing use of flash memory in the consumer electronic device market, such as MP3/MP4 players, digital cameras, and mobile phones, the increased stock will significantly increase the quality and quantity of data storage. For example, a single chip using the new chip would hold the equivalent of 27 single-sided DVDS.

Perhaps more interest in customer PC readers is the promise of solid-state disks (SSDs) as a rival to hard drives. In our dream PC tests we found that a Vadim system using a 32GB SSD showed a significant speed improvement over a PC using a traditional hard drive. So two (or four) 512SSDs in zone 0 will prove to be the ultimate storage system.

That said, if Samsung's existing 32GB SSD costs £243, You will probably need A bank account balance area challenge Rome Abramovich to buy four 512GB drives. You'll have time to save up, because products using the chip won't be out until 2009!
