Google China announced today that the company is rolling out an open-source initiative for the Linux version of Google Desktop starting immediately. The new release adds Google Gadget functionality to the Linux version of Google Desktop, and its source code will be made available to all users. Users can either use it directly or conduct secondary development based on the source code. This is the first open-source project globally from Google targeting the Linux desktop, and it also marks the beginning of Google's implementation of an open platform strategy.
