Foreign websites have reported that displaying white pages consumes 74W of power, while all-black pages only need 59W. Google responds to about 200 million requests a day. Let's assume that each request is displayed for 10 seconds, which means that Google spends about 550,000 hours a day on our computer screens. Assuming a user watches Google in full screen mode, a black background would save 15W (74-59), which translates to 8.3 MWH of electricity saved globally per day, or 3,000 MWH per year! At an American electricity price of 10 cents per kilowatt-hour, the savings are worth $300,000.
Tired of white Google? Maybe for a change!
