Palm Guardian, a safer craft knife | Good Living

Confucius said, "If a workman wants to do his work well, he must first sharpen his tools." Indeed, good tools often bring about twice the result with half the effort, but that's not always the case. Sometimes, overly good tools can lead to half the result with double the effort. For instance, a razor-sharp craft knife might cause problems if you accidentally slip while cutting paper too forcefully, only to find that you've cut yourself instead of the paper.

Designers Scot Herbst and Alfredo Muccino clearly side with Confucius. They look down on my argument with disdain and present their jointly designed **Slice Box Cutter** as a lesson: it's not because the craft knife was too good or too sharp; rather, it simply wasn't good enough.

Their design features a ceramic blade, second in hardness only to diamond. However, what sets it apart most from traditional craft knives is its uniquely curved grip extension. Not only does it look better and provide users with a more comfortable feel, but more importantly, it wraps around your tightly clenched fist, protecting your hand from accidental slips that could cause injury. This simple, practical, and safe design earned it the prestigious Red Dot Design Award in 2011.
